SPACE MISSIONS
Humanity's grand journey of exploration · from low Earth orbit to interstellar space
The first artificial satellite in human history, launched by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957. This 58 cm-diameter metal sphere orbited Earth every 96 minutes, transmitting simple radio beeps heard worldwide. Its launch ignited the Space Race between the US and USSR, directly leading to the creation of NASA.
That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon. Apollo 11 was the pinnacle of the Apollo program, which achieved six successful Moon landings between 1969-1972, returning 382 kg of lunar samples.
The first spacecraft to cross the asteroid belt and visit Jupiter (Pioneer 10) and Saturn (Pioneer 11). They captured the first close-up images of the Great Red Spot and Saturn's rings, blazing the trail for the Voyager missions. Both carry the Pioneer Plaque — a gold-anodized aluminum plate depicting Earth's location and human figures, humanity's first interstellar message.
The first successful Mars landing and long-term surface science mission. Each Viking consisted of an orbiter and a lander. They returned the first color photos from the Martian surface and conducted the famous Labeled Release experiment to test for microbial metabolic activity in Martian soil. Though the results remain debated, Viking established our fundamental understanding of Martian geology and climate.
Arguably the greatest exploration mission in human history. The twin spacecraft flew by Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, returning unprecedented high-resolution images. In 2012, Voyager 1 became the first human-made object to enter interstellar space. Each carries a Golden Record — a time capsule of Earth's sounds and images, a greeting to any extraterrestrial civilization. Both still transmit data to this day.
The first Jupiter orbiter, which spent 8 years studying the Jovian system across 34 orbits. Galileo discovered compelling evidence for a global subsurface ocean on Europa, observed active volcanoes on Io, and deployed an atmospheric probe that plunged directly into Jupiter's atmosphere. The mission ended in 2003 with a deliberate plunge into Jupiter to avoid contaminating Europa.
A revolutionary telescope that transformed our understanding of the cosmos. Orbiting 540 km above Earth, it has made over 1.5 million observations, including the iconic Hubble Deep Field — revealing thousands of distant galaxies in a seemingly empty patch of sky. Serviced by five Space Shuttle missions, it remains one of the most productive scientific instruments ever built.
A 20-year odyssey to the Saturn system that revolutionized our understanding of the ringed planet. Cassini discovered ice geysers erupting from Enceladus's south pole — hinting at a subsurface ocean that could harbor life. The Huygens probe successfully landed on Titan, humanity's first landing in the outer Solar System. The mission ended with a dramatic "Grand Finale" plunge into Saturn's atmosphere in 2017.
The first mission to orbit and land on a comet. After a 10-year journey spanning 6.4 billion km, Rosetta rendezvoused with Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. In 2014, the Philae lander touched down on the comet's surface — the first comet landing ever achieved. Rosetta detected glycine, an amino acid, supporting the hypothesis that the building blocks of life may have been delivered to Earth by comets.
From Spirit and Opportunity (designed for 90 days, lasted 14 years) to Curiosity (landed 2012, still exploring Gale Crater) and Perseverance (landed 2021 with the first interplanetary helicopter Ingenuity), Mars rovers have continuously revealed evidence that the Red Planet once had abundant liquid water. Perseverance is collecting samples for a future return mission to bring Martian rocks back to Earth.
The first spacecraft to fly by Pluto, returning breathtaking images of its heart-shaped glacier plains in 2015 and fundamentally reshaping our understanding of this dwarf planet. In 2019, it flew past Arrokoth (Ultima Thule), the most distant object ever explored by a spacecraft, located in the Kuiper Belt. It continues its journey toward interstellar space.
The first spacecraft to orbit two different celestial bodies beyond the Earth-Moon system, using innovative ion propulsion. Dawn studied Vesta (2011-2012) and Ceres (2015-2018), the two largest objects in the asteroid belt. It discovered mysterious bright spots on Ceres — later confirmed to be salt deposits, hinting at subsurface liquid water.
China's perfectly executed "orbit, land, return" lunar exploration strategy. Chang'e 1 & 2 mapped the Moon from orbit, Chang'e 3 achieved China's first soft landing, Chang'e 4 (2019) made history as the first spacecraft to land on the far side of the Moon, and Chang'e 5 (2020) returned 1,731 grams of lunar samples — the first since 1976. Chang'e 6 (2024) achieved the first far-side sample return.
The closest-ever approach to the Sun — its mission is to "touch the Sun." Parker travels at ~192 km/s (the fastest human-made object) and repeatedly flies through the Sun's corona, where temperatures reach millions of degrees. A 11.4 cm carbon-composite heat shield protects it from 1,400°C temperatures. It is unraveling why the corona is hotter than the solar surface and how the solar wind accelerates.
Hubble's successor and the most powerful space telescope ever built. Its 6.5-meter gold-plated mirror operates at the L2 Lagrange point, observing in infrared to peer through dust clouds and detect light from the first galaxies formed after the Big Bang. Its first full-color images released in 2022 stunned the world, opening a new era in astronomy.
China's first independent Mars mission, achieving orbiting, landing, and roving in a single attempt — a feat never before accomplished. Zhurong explored Utopia Planitia, analyzing Martian soil composition and geological structure, making China only the second nation to successfully operate a rover on the Martian surface.
NASA's ambitious crewed return to the Moon, aiming to establish a sustainable presence at the lunar south pole and pave the way for future crewed Mars missions. Artemis I (2022) successfully completed an uncrewed lunar flyby, Artemis II will carry four astronauts around the Moon, and Artemis III will land the first woman and next man on the lunar surface — the first Moon landing in over 50 years.
ISRO's historic mission that made India the fourth nation to achieve a soft landing on the Moon, and the first to land near the lunar south pole. The Pragyan rover detected sulfur, aluminum, calcium, iron, and titanium in the lunar soil. The entire mission cost approximately $75 million — less than most Hollywood space movies.
NASA's largest-ever planetary spacecraft, designed to investigate the habitability of Jupiter's moon Europa. Beneath its icy crust lies a saltwater ocean with potentially twice the water volume of all Earth's oceans combined. Europa Clipper will perform ~50 close flybys carrying 9 science instruments to measure ice shell thickness, ocean depth, and chemistry — and may even fly through water vapor plumes to sample them directly.
ESA's flagship mission to the Jupiter system, targeting three icy moons: Ganymede (the largest moon in the Solar System, with its own magnetic field), Europa, and Callisto. Arriving in 2031, JUICE will ultimately enter orbit around Ganymede — the first time a spacecraft has orbited a moon other than Earth's.
